About the Course

Have you ever wondered what it would take for humans to travel beyond the comforts of our home planet, Earth? You are invited to join us in Space Medicine - an online experience facilitated by two recent Duke graduates in which you will learn about and engage in the most pressing medical challenges facing NASA and others advancing the future of space exploration. Space Medicine is a free, non-certificate course featuring interactive modules and weekly live discussions. Participants will reflect on questions pertinent to the future of human health in space, such as: - How do humans respond to extreme environments? - How can engineers, doctors, and scientific researchers come together to prevent space related health issues before they occur? - If future generations of humans attempt to live in space, what challenges will they face? - Which evolutionary adaptations to living on Earth are useful to surviving a months- or years-long voyage? No prior experience in science or medicine is required, as life science concepts will be introduced as necessary. At the end of the course, you will have gained valuable experience in applying modern medicine to space-based situations, from space flight to journeying to Mars....

I think it was very good as an introduction to space medicine. At the end of the course it would be good to have a few pointers on where to go next or suggestions to a couple of things to read next

The moment I saw a course that combined human biology with aviation, space, and extreme environments, I didn’t realise how profoundly it would change the way I understood the human body. At the beginning, anatomy felt like a collection of diagrams and definitions. By the end, it felt like a living, adaptable system constantly responding to its environment. One of the most impactful aspects was learning about human limits. Exploring acceleration, pressure, radiation, hypoxia, and hyperoxia showed me that while the human body is not built for extremes, it is remarkably capable of adapting—up to a point. I came to understand why pilots lose consciousness under high G-forces, why altitude leads to oxygen deprivation, and why too much oxygen can be just as harmful as too little. These ideas stopped being abstract and became clear outcomes of blood flow, cellular energy production, and organ support. The historical development of aviation medicine made the learning deeply human. Many principles we rely on today emerged from real experiences of early pilots, engineers, and doctors working at the limits of human survival. This helped me appreciate how medical knowledge evolves over time, shaped by exploration, experimentation, and innovation. Studying space and Martian medicine transformed my view of anatomy even further. Removing Earth’s gravity revealed how dependent our bones, muscles, cardiovascular system, and sense of balance are on constant mechanical forces. I began to see the body not as separate systems, but as an integrated whole, where changes in one condition affect every other system. What made this course especially meaningful was its interdisciplinary approach. Physics, biology, history, and medicine were woven together seamlessly. Concepts like acceleration, pressure, and radiation became essential tools for understanding injury, disease, and survival rather than isolated scientific ideas. Above all, this course made anatomy relevant and applied. It showed how understanding the human body is crucial for aviation safety, space exploration, emergency medicine, and future human life beyond Earth. It didn’t just teach information—it reshaped how I think about the human body under stress and in extreme environments. A course like this stands out because it turns learning into deep understanding, encouraging students to see the human body as dynamic, interconnected, and constantly adapting to the challenges it faces.

I’ve just completed the Space Medicine course, and I’m incredibly grateful for the experience. The course provided valuable insights into the complexities of human health in space, and the content was both engaging and thought-provoking. It has sparked a deep interest in space exploration, and I’m excited to apply what I’ve learned, especially in my pursuit of gynecology. Thank you, Coursera, for offering such a fascinating and informative course. I look forward to applying this knowledge to my future endeavors in gync... Best regards, Asrifa Ishaq ❤️🩺..

This was a super interesting introduction into aerospace physiology, which explores the most classical examples and case studies of aerospace related health conditions and then provides a primer into more extreme circumstances in space and beyond. This is a beginner level course but I recommend it after you've familiarized yourself with fundamental concepts in the biological and physical sciences (human physiology, gas laws, gravity, etc.). Enjoy!

Loved it! Felt so refreshing to learn about all the critical aspects involved in extreme environments. As an architectural designer that has always loved science and learning about the space this is all really attractive. The instructors and guests were very passionate and easy to understand. It was also great to see how so many areas of study intersect with this topic. Really awesome! Would look forward to a part 2!

A brilliant introductory course for those who are interested in the concept of space medicine, but don't know where to start. I enjoyed the case study based approach of each module, which demonstrated a problem encountered by astronauts, before diving into the more scientific aspects of the issue.

Was very beneficial. You don't need any previous knowledge, everything is explained very simply, although I had to rewatch some of the videos, because I don't have any background in Physics.
